day 12 - kate

Here's my todays - its whats left of a, let go by mistake, balloon, ,, you can see the loop at the end tied around the childs wrist. i found it in the field while moving sheep. i love finding these and the, how far will it go, ones that have cards on to return to releaser. The first sort are sadly poetic, the second optimistically so... i love that at the moment of finding i am connected to the original owner across space and time, its a bit like finding flint tools  - which always feels like time travel.

Day 11 charlies art walk

I

I collected some of the wild flowers today on Parson Cross on Charlie's art walk looking at green spaces I thought that this is the origin of the press idea.  It was a nice walk and I saw some new bits and talked to a man who had Koy carp in his garden pond and had served in the navy in the south pacific and lived for 7 years with a budest  girl in Amerca. The walk was nice I took the dog.  It felt funny collecting these flowers I wondered if they we self sown I think that these sights are returning back as the council can no longer afford to plant them which is a shame but they will return to"Nature " as Raymond Williams would think it.

Richards page

I gave Richard Steadman -Jones my page today - I bumped into him at the university and we had a coffee.  I didn't actually give him it but will next week.

29.9.12 - day 11 - kate

Back in Lincolnshire today so while out walking with the dogs i drew a landscape........, its from the top of the Short Becks looking south west with the 11 Acre in the distance.

day 10 and Kaths from day 1

My day 10 27/9/12. I set fire to it, partly because of thinking more about the Barribal carbon stuff, and that its not carbon, but graphite on the layer from 2 days ago, and so i wanted it right. Then also because of the act of fire i initiated a natural force....or something. However all's thats left is the ash...but this photos good!

Kaths layers collected form her shop that she completed on 19/9/12. The first photo is from by the till, with workings out and also things she sold out of that day.

The second is all the signatures of all people [bar 3!] who came into the shop over the course of the day. "Eric from the butchers signed with a fake name" Over a hundred people....

26/9/12 - day 9

kate - day 8

25.9.12
Working with Anna Barriball drawings today in gallery and so was thinking about covering paper/making rubbings - i carboned my sheet both sides - 'After Anna'

Made me think of the black square in Tristam Shandy

Day 7 - Kate

Here's my day 7 - i have written on the sheet - "in the gallery all day, surrounded by landscapes - these ones are from the notice board"

Thursday 27 September 2012

Day 9 Diversity

This is a banana leaf wrap for Quat which lots of Yemeni and Somali people around here chew - it looks like privet and acts a bit like a mild speed - you chew it and pack a big lump of it in the corner of your mouth. looking at it one way it's like natural red bull  looking at it another it's a cultural practice.  I think the banana leaves look like Andy Goldworthy sculptures but I'm interested to see what they look like when they are squashed.

day 8 silk flowers

I didn't really take these from a grave but they had been put on one.  Silk flowers stay bright for ages but death and time fade everything and I love the way the colours gradually wash out in the rain at the cemetery.  It reminds me of a line in a song 'Nothings supposed to last for ever." it's ironic that in a place where most people have gone we try and make things last for longer

Tuesday 25 September 2012

Day 7 written in blood

I wanted to do something about everything outside been the landscape so I dramatically wrote inside in blood - except I pricked my thumb and it hurt and I didn't really get enough to get the effect I wanted I will do it when I have a nose bleed. This would be painless.

Day 6 22nd Sep

I thought my days were looking a bit "Natural worldey" so did something different and read a Raymond Williams article on "Ideas of Nature" and took some notes and thoughts.  I find writing longhand such a struggle but it looks nice if not neat - makes very little sense though.

Sunday 23 September 2012

Kates day 4/5/6 plus Brantwood Pressings

Day 4 - 21st:  Bill hook. A drawing, to scale, of tool used today - i wrote on the sheet : today i pulled out yards of electric fence using great grandad guys bill hook

Day 5 22nd - Farmers Guardian [with article by sister Liz on page 37] and news from Croft Farm. I wanted to add something political/current and more pointed as i was worrying that i was aesthetising the whole thing - then i thought about the ruskin quote Louise Pullens used-  I would rather teach drawing that my pupils would learn to love Nature than teach the looking at Nature that they may learn to draw’

which made me worry a bit less, but its all still problematic.

Day 6  - 23rd -As you can see i stopped worrying too and instead just kept going to see what happened and found the last dandelion clocks of the summer, collected on our river bank and in Uffington Park. I wanted 24 to make a 24hour clock pun but there wasn't 24!

Visit to Brantwood: I had a sort out this morning and found these pressed flowers collected from Ruskin's garden, so thought they ought to go in, just after the plans page. I wanted Ruskin to imbue goodness through the press.

The problem of the pages being contrived is interesting - i think i am honestly engaging in the landscape and looking and thinking about my relationship to it and pondering what it is.....i respond to the moment and dont go out looking for the thing to add to the sheet, so for me it isnt made up, yet it is created deliberately. i hope that over time it becomes increasingly spontaneous and in fact it is already starting to feeling like a new fitness regime - but as they say do something 21 times and it becomes a habit difficult to break  [or something like that] .... However I worry we will be accused less of mining the community and more of stealing beauty!
However the big thing for me is it brings to the fore again is the ongoing problem of how to represent the landscape in a way that doesnt immediately look romantic.....

Day 5 feathers from a walk

Mostly from pigeons and Magpies they are the most visible birds on the walk so appropriate.  I think there is one crow feather.  I collected other stuff today - the lid of a tin of quality street which nature had taken back and some silk flowers which had blown from a grave.  I think it's starting to look aesthetic and contrived but to be honest I don't care.

Day 4 Geraniums

I didn't get chance to do a day yesterday as it felt busy and I was going to my mums 70th Birthday party.  I did notice how red some geraniums looked and thought about stopping the car and picking some.  I didn't but this morning I went out to look for some and found these.  they are slightly passed their best but still incredibly red.

Saturday 22 September 2012

sycamore leaves 21st sep

I had put off walking the dog for the whole day because of rain. In the Cemetery I picked up a handfull of dirty leaves and thought they would do.  On the way back I saw these and picked them up - I still have the other dirty wet leaves in my Pocket.  As we are thinking about Landscape I have written a haiku.

Wet leaves
Smell and look like an end
the rain kept us in

Day 3. Honey

Went to leaf allotments in Parson Cross today and they opened the hives and I had a look inside hives I was going to write something but it felt like Honey was the summer and it was slipping away.  I enjoyed dripping the honey from the spoon it's a sort of organic Jackson Pollock but i love how the line is broken but the movement connects it

Steves Day two. 19th Sep mums 70th

Collected some of the last Blackberries in the Cemetery. Squashed under marble slab which I found in my grandads garage and cut up on a glass saw when I was at collage probably an old butchers from the village.  It's stained now but still good for pastry - and squashing things
